Never before has the metal underground been filled with talented musicians with something new to say, and Garry Brents is undoubtedly one of the most original and bizarre around. His tech-death metal creature, SALLOW MOTH, draws inspiration from masters such as AKERCOCKE, early NOCTURNUS, CYNIC, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, WORMED, MAUDLIN OF THE WELL, EDGE OF SANITY and even BARK PSYCHOSIS, but adding a touch of genuine sci-fi madness to a songwriting already rich in creative ideas and progressive riffs.
This is demonstrated by SALLOW MOTH’s new album, “Mossbane Lantern,” an extension to the anthological format of the “Vial” EP (2024), revolving around various esoteric, sci-fi artifacts.

But what exactly is a mossbane lantern, depicted on Jacob Devlin’s beautiful cover painting? “It’s a powerful, green-encrusted lantern hidden on an icy plane,” Brents explains. “It’s a highly coveted artifact which allows humans to temporarily displace their corporeal form and teleport short distances within the plane they are on, while granting non-humans the ability to teleport over greater distances, including inter-dimensional travel. Each song depicts a story of a different traveler’s experiences on their unique path to the Mossbane Lantern, as well as the aftereffects of activating it in conjunction with these other artifacts.”

Accompanied by a plethora of equally talented friends, Garry Brents’ strings together devastating death metal riffs one after the other, enriching SALLOW MOTH’s music with atmospheric synth injections, weird electronic interludes that recall the sounds of old Atari video games, complex melodic architectures, unexpected tempo changes, convulsive guitar solos and many other sonic surprises that make the album varied, always fresh, intriguing, and decidedly original.
